Most tartans are freely available for anyone to wear despite what the grumpy-grumps will tell you.

Though there are some tartans you do need explicit permission to use.

We only deal with unrestricted tartans and our own exclusive tartan designs.

There are only a handful of tartans that you'd need explicit permission to use.

With very few exceptions, you can wear almost any tartan.
The only proviso is that you love it.

Tartan has had a garbled past, but it's ultimately clothing, and clothing is made to be worn.

I've been living here in the Highlands for nearly 20 years.

In that time I've designed (and printed) tartan products for the royal family, the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Clutha trust, British Judo Association, and an assortment of other printed and woven projects. 

So you're in good hands, but they're not Scottish born hands.

No, we don't make kilts.
If you want a kilt, there are lots of other businesses who specialise in traditional weaving - but we’re not one of them.

If you want something extra comfy to curl up on the couch in though - we're exactly your folks.

Wool is itchy.

Prices for that sort of service start at around two grand. It's an incredibly cool project to undertake but it depends what you are looking to get out of the experience.

I will not disparage the process because it is beyond cool to have done.

But most people who do it come out the other side with a custom tartan paperweight that cost them +£2000; which they securely wrap in plastic and then store in their attic for the rest of their lives.

Or at least until their grandkids discover it and use it to make togas.
